Fix missing trip purposes

A business trip with no purpose recorded will block your FBT export. This screen puts a purpose on the whole backlog in one pass instead of one trip at a time.

Can't find this in your app? Your business owner can switch the Logbook module off, which hides it for everyone — there's no message when that happens. An owner or admin can turn it back on in Settings → Business settings → Active Modules.

The ATO wants to know what each business trip was for — "site visit", "client meeting", "pick up materials". A trip marked business with that field empty is incomplete, and it's the single most common thing holding an FBT export up.

Fixing it used to mean opening each trip's edit screen one at a time. It doesn't any more.

Get there

Tap the business trips without a purpose blocker on the FBT summary card. It takes you straight to the list of trips that need one — and only those. These are not the same trips as the unclassified queue: a trip here is already marked business, it just has no purpose on it.

Clear the backlog

  1. Pick a purpose from the chip rail at the top, or type your own.

  2. Tap Apply to all remaining trips to put that purpose on every trip still missing one — or tap a single trip to give just that one the selected purpose.

  3. Work through the rail as many times as you need. Trips are grouped by date, so you can see a day's worth at a glance and give them the purpose that fits.

  4. Save.

A row that's carrying a purpose is a row that will be saved — there's no separate tick-box to keep in sync. If a row shows a purpose, it's done.

Getting the purposes right

Resist the urge to put the same word on everything. "Business" is not a purpose; it's the classification you already applied. A purpose should say what the trip achieved, because that's what makes the logbook stand up if anyone asks.

If most of your week genuinely is the same kind of trip, that's a good sign you should be using auto-classify rules instead — a rule attaches the purpose as the trip closes, so the backlog never forms.

Addresses and purposes wrap onto a second line here rather than being cut short. That's deliberate: half an address is no help in answering "what was this trip for?".

This one is free

Clearing missing purposes works on every plan, including Drive. You only need Cruise for the export itself.
